Amazonian Initiative Movement (AIM)
Amazonian Initiative Movement (AIM) is an grassroot organization founded in 2000, dedicated to eradicating Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Sierra Leone, where 86% of women and girls have undergone the harmful traditional practice. AIM also combats forced marriage and sexual violence, striving to uphold women's rights and shift deep-rooted cultural norms. Through advocacy, lobbying, and community-driven initiatives, AIM promotes participatory governance and empowers women at the grassroots level. Their innovative work includes hosting dialogue forums, providing civic education, and offering alternative, bloodless rites that preserve cultural traditions without the harm of FGM.
In Sierra Leone, the practice of FGM is carried out by secret societies known as the "Bondo bush," which hold significant social and political influence. Rugiatu Turay, founder and director of AIM, stands on the frontlines of this struggle, courageously educating Bondo society members on the physical and emotional harms of FGM while pioneering alternative rites that celebrate girls' transitions in a safe and empowering way.
Support AIM’s tireless efforts to protect Sierra Leonean women and girls. Your contribution can help end FGM and strengthen the movement for a brighter future.
