The Gambia Committee on Traditional Practices (GAMCOTRAP)
The Gambia Committee on Traditional Practices (GAMCOTRAP), established in 1984, is a prominent grassroots organization dedicated to promoting the political, social, and reproductive rights of women and girls in The Gambia. A significant focus of GAMCOTRAP's work is the campaign against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), a harmful traditional practice that severely impacts the health and well-being of women and girls.
GAMCOTRAP has been at the forefront of efforts to eradicate FGM through advocacy, social mobilization, and education. One of their notable achievements is their work with former circumcisers, helping them abandon the practice and empowering them to become advocates against FGM. Through workshops and dialogues, GAMCOTRAP addresses misconceptions about FGM being a religious requirement and highlights the physical and emotional harms caused by the practice, including prolonged labor and other reproductive health issues.
Support GAMCOTRAP’s tireless efforts to protect and uplift Gambian women and girls. Your contribution can help end FGM and strengthen the movement for a brighter future.
