TNI
The Tasaru Ntomonok Initiative (TNI) is a grassroots organization founded in 1999 by activist Agnes Pareyio in the Narok District of Kenya's Southern Rift Valley. TNI is dedicated to eradicating Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and early childhood marriage within the Maasai community by educating girls and their families about the harmful effects of these traditional practices. In Maasai culture, FGM is deeply ingrained as a rite of passage, making TNI’s mission a challenging one that requires tackling deeply rooted beliefs.
TNI operates the Tasaru Rescue Center for Girls, providing a sanctuary for girls fleeing FGM and forced marriages. The center not only shelters the girls but also ensures they are enrolled in school and participate in workshops that empower them with knowledge of their rights and the dangers of FGM.
Agnes Pareyio, TNI's founder, has been a tireless advocate, often traveling to remote communities to intervene on behalf of girls at risk. By collaborating with local authorities, traditional leaders, and NGOs, TNI not only raises awareness about the consequences of FGM but also educates communities about Kenya’s legal ban on FGM for girls under 18, as outlined in the 2001 Children’s Act. Through this multi-faceted approach, TNI continues to create lasting change, offering girls the opportunity for a safer, healthier future.
Support TNI’s mission to protect Maasai girls and end FGM today.
